FHE Overview

Definition and Significance

The term "homomorphic" comes from the Greek words "homos" (meaning "same") and "morphe" (meaning "form" or "shape"). Homomorphic encryption is a form of encryption that enables computations on encrypted data without requiring decryption. This ensures data remains protected throughout its entire lifecycle, fundamentally changing how organisations approach data security and utility for the better.

Origins and Development

FHE was first theorised by Shafi Goldwasser, Silvio Micali, and Charles Rackoff in 1978, with practical implementation achieved by Craig Gentry in 2009. This breakthrough paved the way for real-world applications of FHE in data processing.

Recent Progressions:

  • 2014: Google AI's bootstrapping approach made FHE more practical.
  • 2015: Columbia University's Levelled FHE (L-FHE) allowed granular access control.
  • 2016: University of Waterloo's predictive encryption scheme enabled condition-based computations.
  • 2017: MIT's secure multi-party computation (SMC) facilitated computations on data held by multiple parties without data exposure.
  • 2018: IBM's oblivious RAM (ORAM) allowed private computations on encrypted data in cloud environments.

Characteristics of FHE:

  • Secure Data Sharing: Enables secure collaboration on sensitive data without revealing underlying information.
  • Advanced Data Analytics: Allows extraction of actionable insights from encrypted data, enhancing utility while maintaining security.
  • Zero-Knowledge Proofs: Ensures that the party performing computations gains no knowledge about the input data other than the output, adding an extra layer of security.

Vaultree's Contribution

Vaultree’s FHE technology has overcome previous limitations, allowing real-time encrypted data operations at speeds comparable to plaintext processing. This breakthrough ensures sensitive data remains protected throughout its lifecycle, eliminating the need for decryption and significantly reducing the risk of data breaches. Our achievements include:

  • Enabling real-time encrypted data analysis and processing.
  • Developing scalable and efficient encryption protocols.
  • Maintaining compliance with global data protection standards like GDPR and HIPAA.
  • Revolutionising data security for industries such as healthcare and finance.

Secure Enablement

With these achievements comes a new world of secure data enablement, allowing your organisation to:

  • Real-Time Encrypted Data Operations: Allows for secure, near real-time processing and analysis of encrypted data without decryption.
  • Enhanced Data Privacy: Ensures that data remains encrypted during all stages of its lifecycle, significantly reducing the risk of data breaches.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meets and exceeds global data protection standards such as GDPR and HIPAA.
  • Scalable Solutions: Supports extensive data volumes and complex models, maintaining performance and security.
  • Actionable Insights: Provides secure, advanced analytics on encrypted data, enabling actionable insights while preserving data integrity and confidentiality.
